About us.

Why this site exists

Op shops are some of the best places to shop, and some of the hardest to find out about. Hours change, shops move, small ones have no website, and the big charities each keep their own list. We wanted one place that shows them all, says honestly how sure it is about each one, and lets shoppers fix what is wrong.

It started in Canberra as a small pilot and is growing to cover the whole country.

Who is behind it

Op Shop Atlas is run by the Op Shop Atlas Team: a small independent project, not a company or a charity, and not connected to any op shop organisation. We are not paid by any of the shops we list, and they cannot pay to be listed higher.

We build and look after the site ourselves. We use software, including AI tools, to gather public information and to help write and check the site. A person reads and decides on every shop, tip and change sent in by shoppers before it appears.

How we keep it honest

  • Every shop shows a stamp saying how we know its details, from "Visited" to "Map data only". See How it works.
  • We only collect facts that are public, such as names, addresses and opening hours. We do not copy other people's photos, reviews or ratings.
  • Tips are about being useful, such as parking, what a shop is good for, or how it is laid out. They are not star ratings or reviews.

Other things we make

This is one of a few small projects. Another is SwiftKit, a set of free everyday online tools.

We've also published a couple of Large Print Puzzle Books.
